What is The Big Read?

Old Dominion University has received a grant from the National Endowment for the Arts (NEA) to host The Big Read in the Tidewater area. ODU is one of 269 nonprofits--including arts, culture, and science organizations; libraries; and municipalities--to receive a grant to host a Big Read project between September 2009 and June 2010. The Big Read gives communities the opportunity to come together to read, discuss, and celebrate one of 30 selections from U.S. and world literature.

The Big Read in the Tidewater area will focus on The Joy Luck Club by Amy Tan. Activities will take place in May 2010.  May is also Asian Pacific American Heritage Month, and the timing of the project allows ODU’s Big Read to leverage related Asian heritage activities to promote a culture of reading in our community.

ODU’s Big Read grant will promote and carry out community-based reading programs. Our Big Read monthly events will feature activities such as kick off, book discussions, movie screenings, performing arts events, cultural activities, and contests.  ODU will involve local government officials and dignitaries by inviting them to participate in the Asian Heritage Festival kick off event for the Big Read. ODU has very strong commitment from the Chesapeake and Norfolk public libraries, schools, and community centers to participate in the reading campaign. We look forward attendance by officials of the Tidewater area as well as representatives from local military bases, cultural organizations, public schools, Asian heritage schools, libraries, and professional associations. “The Big Read highlights not only literature, but also what can be accomplished in partnership,” said NEA Acting Chairman Patrice Walker Powell.  “The Institute is pleased to support The Big Read, which brings communities together to enjoy literature in their public libraries,” said Anne-Imelda M. Radice, Director of the Institute of Museum and Library Services, the NEA’s lead federal partner for The Big Read. “Libraries are community anchors that serve as centers of engagement, literacy, and lifelong learning. There is nothing better than to read a great book and share your delight and insights with others.”
