Bestseller Lydia Netzer, author of Shine Shine Shine, will introduce us to Julie Wu, and engage Julie in a conversation about creating the characters in their respective books.

Julie Wu's The Third Son is a richly-textured saga of political upheaval, distanced lovers, and the American Dream. In this  debut novel, Wu transports readers to a culture so rarely featured in American fiction - embattled midcentury Taiwan - seen through the eyes of a lovable, tenacious hero.

The Third Son begins in 1943, as air-raid sirens blare in Japanese-occupied Taiwan. Eight-year-old Saburo, the least favored son of a Taiwanese politician, is in no hurry to return home, where he is taunted and abused. In the forest, he meets and instantly falls in love with a young girl, Yoshiko. For years he tries to find her again, but when he finally does, she is by the side of his oldest brother and greatest rival.

In Saburo, Julie Wu has created an extraordinary character who has had to fight for everything he's ever wanted: food, an education, his first love, freedom in the United States, and a career in aerospace engineering.

Wu based her protagonist's struggle on her own father's journey to America, making every line of this novel ring true. Hailed as a "magnificently inspiring story of one man's odyssey to freedom" and described as "a fable of borders-- between childhood and adulthood, Taiwan and America," The Third Son is perfect for summer reading, a great fit for book clubs, and essential for any reader who has fought to achieve a dream.

Julie Wu earned a BA in literature from Harvard University and an MD from Columbia College of Physicians and Surgeons. She has received artist fellowships from the Vermont Studio Center and the Massachusetts Cultural Council. She lives near Boston with her husband and children. Visit her online www.juliewuauthor.com
