In 1942, as a token of good faith in the tenuous new Grand Alliance and to keep the Russians bolstered until a European invasion could be mounted, FDR and Churchill agreed to send Stalin’s army supplies across the Arctic. The voyage was a nightmare—if the German bombers and U-boats didn’t get you, the icebergs might, and if you somehow managed to get through, the Soviet ports of Murmansk and Archangel provided little comfort, with their bombed landscapes, supply shortages, and wary Soviet hosts. Publishing just in time for Memorial Day, THE GHOST SHIPS OF ARCHANGEL: The Arctic Voyage That Defied the Nazis is veteran journalist William Geroux’s gripping history of one such mission.
