About the Author

Susan Garretson Swartzburg, Preservation Specialist at Rutgers University, established the Preservation Office at Yale University Library, and developed procedures for the handling of deteriorated library materials that are followed by a number of major libraries today. She has published Preserving Library Materials (Scarecrow Press, 1980) and is active in conservation and bibliographic organizations. Holly J. Bussey (AB, Wheaton College; MLIS, Rutgers), Vice President and Manager, Ayer Information Center, New York, hold responsibility for all secondary research in Ayer's worldwide offices. She has been active in library planning and space design, has consulted on several renovation projects, including the Staten Island Historical Society Library, and has guest-edited a thematic issue of Special Libraries. Frank Garretson, AIA, has an architectural practice in Sheffield, MA specializing in renovations and additions to older homes. Formerly a city planner with a special interest in writing and implementing preservation plans, he received Classical America's Arthur Ross Award in 1988 for designing homes in the regional vernacular.
