About the Author

Daniel Defoe (c. 1660-1731) is considered to be one of the founders of the English novel, popularizing the form along with such writers as Samuel Richardson. In addition to his writing, he worked as a trader and as a spy. His canon of work includes more than 500 books, pamphlets and journals on a variety of topics including politics, crime and religion. Henry Morley (1822 - 1894) was an English academic and one of the earliest professors of English literature in Great Britain. Morley was an an editor of and a contributor to several of Dickens' publications until he became a professor of English literature at University College London. His major work was English Writers, a 10-volume biography compilation.
