Common Sense, an essay written by the English philosopher and founding father of the United States Thomas Paine, was first published in January 1776, during the American Revolution. The work, a strong argument against British rule at a time when the independence issue was causing indecision among a large part of the settlers, exerted great influence on public opinion in the war years and deeply inspired the ideals of the Declaration of Independence ratified a few months later. Paine renounced the philosophical language and Latin, widely used by writers of the Enlightenment, to write his book in a simple style that all people could understand.
