Jack Gilden, Baltimore author and award winning journalist, has written an entertaining and fascinating story that will appeal to both history and football fans, nationwide. 

His discussion of the book explores Johnny Unitas, Don Shula and how the NFL changed American culture in the 1960s. It presents the origins and events of the fraught relationship of Don Shula, the coach with most wins in NFL history, and Johnny Unitas, the greatest player in league history. It also explores how their intense, turbulent relationship mirrored their era.  Special points of interest include how the two men and their sport lead to the rich and powerful NFL we have today, football as replacement for war, ballplayers as sex objects, and black and white finding equal footing.
