Defying the Odds is a powerful book about growing up in the projects, earning a college education as a single parent and foster parent to her five younger siblings, and building a successful career. Highland Park "Project" was the first Project built in Arkansas. At the local high school, Little Rock Central High School, the Little Rock Nine, were denied entrance even after the United States Supreme Court ruling ending segregation in public schools. Set decades after the integration crisis of 1957, this book will reveal ongoing racial tension and violence many people in America may never personally experience. Defying the Odds shows that one can overcome any and all situations and become a success in life.
Tracy Lynn Roland-McMillon, a graduate of University of Arkansas at Little Rock, opened and ran a paralegal company for several years. She later moved to Norfolk, Virginia, where she has been a college instructor and worked as a mathematical statistician with the Department of Defense. Roland-McMillon is married and has two children, Geremy and Jayde, along with four grandchildren, who reside with their parents in California and Georgia. She also won a community service award for her work as chair of the Hampton Roads Community Health Center Board.
